Electric Bike Safety & Legal Information
Last Updated: August 22, 2026
At Lyzen Tech LTD, we want our customers to enjoy electric mobility safely and responsibly.
Electric bikes, electric dirt bikes, and other electric mobility products can differ significantly in their specifications, power, speed, intended use, and legal classification.
Please read this information carefully before purchasing or using an electric bike or other electric mobility product.
Important Legal Notice
Not every electric bike, electric dirt bike, or electric mobility product sold on our website is classified as an Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycle (EAPC) for use on UK public roads.
Some products are designed specifically for off-road or private-land use and may not be legal to use on public roads, cycle lanes, cycle tracks, pavements, or other public areas.
It is the customer's responsibility to check that a product is suitable and legally permitted for the intended use before purchase and before riding.
What Is a Legal EAPC in Great Britain?
Under current Great Britain rules, an electrically assisted pedal cycle (EAPC) must generally:
-
Have pedals capable of propelling the cycle
-
Have an electric motor with a maximum continuous rated power of no more than 250 watts
-
Stop providing motor assistance when the cycle reaches 15.5 mph (25 km/h)
The rider must be at least 14 years old to ride an EAPC.
A compliant EAPC does not generally need to be registered, taxed, or insured as a motor vehicle, and a driving licence is not generally required.
Where Can a Compliant EAPC Be Used?
A compliant EAPC can generally be used in places where conventional pedal cycles are permitted.
However, an EAPC must not be ridden on pavements.
When riding on public roads, customers must follow applicable road traffic laws and the Highway Code.
High-Powered Electric Bikes
Some products available through our store may have specifications significantly above the EAPC limits.
For example, a product with:
-
A motor exceeding 250W continuous rated power
-
Motor assistance above 15.5 mph
-
No pedals capable of propelling the cycle
-
Certain throttle or other power-assistance configurations
may not qualify as an EAPC.
A vehicle that does not meet the EAPC requirements may instead be treated as a motor vehicle, meaning different registration, approval, insurance, licence, helmet, and road-use requirements may apply.
Electric Dirt Bikes & Off-Road Models
Electric dirt bikes and high-performance electric bikes may be designed primarily for off-road or private-land riding.
Unless a particular product is confirmed as compliant with the applicable requirements for public-road use, customers should not assume that it is road legal simply because it is sold as an "electric bike" or "e-bike".
If a product is intended for private-land use, you must have permission from the landowner before riding it.
"Off-Road Mode"
Some electric cycles may have an "off-road", "unrestricted", or similar mode that allows motor assistance above the EAPC speed limit.
GOV.UK guidance states that a vehicle capable of motor propulsion above 15.5 mph through an off-road mode does not comply with the EAPC requirements.
Customers must not activate or use an unrestricted mode on public roads where doing so would make the vehicle non-compliant with applicable law.
Modifications
Do not modify an electric bike, battery, motor, controller, throttle, speed limiter, brakes, or other safety-critical component in a way that could:
-
Increase the vehicle's speed beyond its legal classification
-
Increase motor power
-
Disable safety controls
-
Change the vehicle's legal classification
-
Compromise braking or handling
-
Create a fire or electrical safety risk
Unauthorised modifications may also affect applicable manufacturer or commercial warranty coverage.
Before Your First Ride
Before riding an electric bike, always:
-
Read the manufacturer's user manual
-
Check the brakes
-
Check tyre condition and pressure
-
Check wheels and steering
-
Check the battery and charger
-
Check that all important bolts and components are secure
-
Check lights and reflectors where applicable
-
Ensure the battery is correctly installed
-
Make sure you understand the controls
-
Start in a safe and suitable environment
-
Wear appropriate protective equipment
The Highway Code recommends ensuring that brakes are efficient and that appropriate lights are used when cycling at night.
Protective Equipment
We strongly recommend wearing appropriate protective equipment when riding an electric bike.
Depending on the product and riding environment, this may include:
-
Helmet
-
Gloves
-
Protective eyewear
-
Appropriate footwear
-
Protective clothing
-
Knee and elbow protection
-
Additional protective equipment for off-road riding
For products classified as motorcycles or mopeds, applicable motorcycle helmet and other legal requirements may apply.
Battery Safety
Electric bikes commonly use rechargeable lithium-ion batteries.
Lithium-ion batteries can present a fire risk if they are damaged, incorrectly modified, poorly maintained, counterfeit, or charged with an incompatible charger.
Always:
-
Use the charger supplied or specifically approved for your product
-
Follow the manufacturer's charging instructions
-
Inspect the battery and charger before use
-
Keep the battery away from excessive heat
-
Keep charging equipment dry
-
Stop using a damaged battery or charger
-
Do not attempt unauthorised battery repairs or modifications
-
Do not use a battery that is swollen, leaking, cracked, unusually hot, or otherwise damaged
Charging Safety
When charging your electric bike:
-
Use the correct charger
-
Follow the manufacturer's instructions
-
Charge in a suitable, dry, and well-ventilated location
-
Keep combustible materials away from charging equipment
-
Do not use damaged charging equipment
-
Do not modify the charger or battery
-
Disconnect the charger according to the manufacturer's instructions
If you notice unusual heat, smoke, a strong smell, swelling, damage, or other signs of a battery problem, stop using the product and move away from the area if it is safe to do so.
For detailed battery safety guidance, always follow the manufacturer's instructions and current UK safety guidance.
Children & Young Riders
Customers must ensure that the product is suitable for the rider's age, size, experience, and ability.
Products should only be used by children where the product is specifically designed and legally permitted for their age group.
Young riders should be supervised appropriately.
A compliant EAPC in Great Britain must not be ridden by anyone under 14 years of age.
Weather & Riding Conditions
Electric bikes should be used in conditions appropriate for the specific product.
Avoid riding through water or exposing electrical components, batteries, chargers, or connectors to conditions beyond the manufacturer's stated limits.
Wet, muddy, icy, or uneven surfaces can significantly affect braking, traction, visibility, and handling.
Off-road riders should take particular care when riding on loose surfaces, steep terrain, or challenging trails.
Maintenance
Regular inspection and maintenance are important for safe operation.
Check:
-
Brakes
-
Tyres
-
Wheels
-
Steering
-
Chain and drivetrain
-
Suspension
-
Lights
-
Electrical connections
-
Battery
-
Charger
-
Fasteners and bolts
Follow the maintenance schedule and instructions supplied by the manufacturer.
If you are unsure about mechanical or electrical work, seek assistance from a suitably qualified bicycle or electrical technician.
Road Safety
When using a legally compliant EAPC on public roads:
-
Follow the Highway Code
-
Ride defensively
-
Stay aware of traffic
-
Use appropriate lights at night
-
Keep brakes and tyres in good condition
-
Avoid using a phone while riding
-
Do not ride under the influence of alcohol or drugs
-
Do not carry loads beyond the manufacturer's stated limits
-
Follow local traffic restrictions

Important: Product Classification
The term "electric bike" or "e-bike" does not automatically mean that a product is a road-legal EAPC.
Customers should never rely solely on the product name, marketing description, or appearance of a vehicle to determine its legal classification.
Always check the actual specifications and applicable UK requirements.
